ULiège MRI Centre
Public - LIEGE - SART TILMANLightweight, minimalist architecture at Sart Tilman
Ephemeral and minimalist, the ULiège MRI Centre houses Belgium’s first 7 Tesla MRI scanner.
Developed by PLAN9 in collaboration with Professor André LUXEN, its architectural setting combines restraint and precision. As the first operational centre of its kind in Belgium, it integrates discreetly into the architectural and natural landscape of Sart Tilman.
A volume in dialogue with the existing building and its surroundings
Installed at the GIGA Cyclotron Research Centre of ULiège, the 7 Tesla MRI scanner opens up new perspectives for neuroscience research.
This ultra-high-field imaging technology makes it possible to explore brain physiology and pathologies with greater precision. It contributes in particular to research into neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.
PLAN 9 designed a subtle and carefully detailed setting for this cutting-edge equipment.
Built with a timber-frame structure, the building takes the form of a restrained volume that enters into dialogue with the existing B30 building.
The façades are clad in open-jointed natural timber. At the base, a polished stainless-steel plinth reflects the surroundings and appears to dissolve the building’s contact with the ground.
Enhanced by a perimeter of black pebbles, this mirrored effect gives the building the impression of floating within the landscape.
The MRI Centre therefore finds its place naturally within the built and natural context of Sart Tilman. A discreet intervention in which architectural precision complements technological precision.
