Reimagining what exists: giving a primary school a new lease of life

A fresh look and new momentum for an existing building

This was the challenge the Plan9 team took on in renovating this primary school.

When we were awarded this public contract, the question was not how to replace an outdated building, but how to give it a new lease of life.

Behind these façades lies much more than walls: generations of pupils, learning, encounters and a history that belongs to this place. Our intervention therefore had to allow the building to evolve, improve its performance and enhance the comfort of its occupants, without erasing its identity.

Improving without losing character

Enhanced insulation, replacement windows, efficient ventilation and an overall improvement in energy performance: every intervention serves the same goal of providing children and teaching staff with a more comfortable, healthier and more sustainable environment.

The choice of materials reflects the same approach. Clay roof tiles and timber cladding were chosen for their durability, longevity and ability to engage naturally with the existing architecture.

The challenge was therefore not simply technical. It was about finding the right intervention: one that improves the building, meets today’s requirements and extends its story without attempting to rewrite it.

Seeing existing buildings as a resource

This renovation illustrates a conviction that increasingly guides our work at Plan9: an existing building is not necessarily a constraint. It can become the starting point for the project.

Taking the time to understand what is already there, identify what deserves to be retained, improve what needs improving and make considered changes helps extend the life of buildings while limiting the use of new resources.

As resources become ever more precious, might true innovation in architecture also lie in our ability to reimagine what already exists?
